Letters to the Editor

Who’s That Candidate?

This letter is in response to a letter to the editor from Kathy Hisey in the Ranchland News on July 13, headed “Primary Election Day.” Kathy Hisey is the wife of El Paso County commissioner Dennis Hisey from District 4 in the Fountain area. Commissioner Hisey just happens to be the campaign manager for Colorado House of Representatives District 19 candidate Jimmie R Brewer. So it is no surprise that the other leading candidate, Marsha Looper, is besmirched as fraudulent and dishonest. That is how they play the game in Fountain to win elections because they have no political legs to stand on their own. There are two” designated candidates” listed on the primary ballot to be voted on Aug 8. Top name on the ballot is Marsha Looper; the second choice name on the ballot is Jimmie R. Brewer. To clear up a point that Kathy made, these two people were chosen in this order at the county assembly based on the number of votes they received there.Marsha Looper won so, Kathy, she certainly knows the process. Second, Marsha was asked and encouraged to run for this office by a number of members of the Republican Party so that we could have some quality representation replacing the inept outgoing representative Richard Decker. To say that the party asked her to run is not that far out of context, and certainly not to be construed a lie as you would imply. She is being endorsed by U. S. representative Tom Tancredo, former president of the Colorado Senate John Andrews, Sen. Tom Wiens and Rep. Dave Schultheis, among others. Is this not the Republican Party?Kathy … the El Paso Republican party didn’t ask Marsha to run (because) your man Jimmie R Brewer had that one in the bag long ago working hard on the county hierarchy, while Marsha Looper was working hard helping our legislators in Denver defeat the toll road grab, the EXCEL power line grab and helping the sponsors of senate bills 230, 78, 115 and house bills 1003, 1411 and 1342, dealing with water, utilities and eminent domain abuse – doing something for all of us.Marsha Looper has been a fixture at the state capitol. They know her by her first name and on sight. These are the things that are honest and honorable. Jimmie R. Brewer has some accomplishments to his credit; can’t leave him out. Like his appointment to Miami-Yoder school board and subsequent defeat in a real election, and his appointments to various boards and committees. The one thing that stands out in most peoples minds is his victorious fight to ZONE us folks out here in the unincorporated part of El Paso County, his own neighbors. A poll commissioned by the El Paso County commissioners at the time showed that by a margin of 4 to 1 we did not want zoning, but with the help of now mayor of Fountain Jeri Howells, we got zoning crammed down our throats and are still living with it. Kathy, your critical and untrue remarks about Marsha are unwarranted; you should offer an apology.Chuck BergstenCalhan
