Letters to the Editor

Where the Heck is 11114?

A couple of months ago, we got a letter from the post office. Maybe they were holding a sale on 39 cent stamps. Jim opened it in anticipation of some great offer. Instead, there was a message that we needed to have more addresses at our address, which is now 11150 Highway 24, Falcon, Co. 80831. If you don’t recognize the address, it is the Falcon Food Store, the Falcon Meadow RV Campground and Falcon Phillips 66.Over the 40-some years we have been there, our address has been Falcon Route, Peyton; RR 3, Peyton 1150 Hwy 24, Peyton, and now 11150 Hwy 24, Falcon. We have three mobile homes on our property and each has its own mail box, addressed 11150 A, 11150 B, and 1150 C. The letter stated that each mobile home needed its own address numbers in case of an emergency. We did not take care of this in a timely manner, and we were sent a second letter telling us to get it done. There had been no problem for the last 40 years, but now it was a rush issue. It turns out it is the regional building people that assign the addresses. Dee contacted them, and a few days later a man from regional showed up. Jim explained we did not care what addresses they gave the mobile homes, but we really wanted the business address to stay the 11150 address. He said he did not see any problem with that. Jim toured the place with the regional building man as he took photos and measurements. Are you still with us? This is where the story gets to be fun. A week or two later, we got a letter informing us of the new addresses for the three mobile homes. Also, there was an address for the building next to the store, which has restrooms, showers and a laundry. And there was to be an address for the small building out in the campground that houses more restrooms and showers. To top all this off, there is to be an address for the canopy over the gas pumps! All these addresses are necessary, so if there is an emergency, the responders will know where to go.In the old days, if there was a car fire at the gas pumps, 911 would be called and the location would be given as Falcon Food Store at 11150 Hwy 24, Falcon. Now it will be given as gas station canopy 11114 Hwy 24, Falcon. But wait, while everyone at our business knows the 11150 address and we get mail there every day, who will remember the gas station canopy’s address? Someone in the stores will have to run out to the highway and look back to see the address on the canopy. The address is to face the highway, be 5″ tall and of contrasting color. The person will then run back to the store to report it to 911. Maybe we will write all the addresses on a piece of paper so we won’t have to do that. Of course, finding that paper after a few months may take a while as those kinds of notes always disappear in times of need.If for some reason you want to send a letter to the canopy for our gas pumps restrooms, please don’t use their address, use the 11150 address as we haven’t yet put up mailboxes for them. One last note. If you live in the Falcon Area, use Falcon and not Peyton as part of your address. Out of area friends, relatives and delivery people go to Peyton to find roads like Garrett and Meridian and then come back to our store telling us they could not find them. We set them straight, as we are at 11150 Hwy 24, Falcon, Co. 80831.Jim and Dee Ozburndjozburn@aol.com
