The Kadets have had a tough 2010 season, and the game against the Falcons put them at 0-10. The Falcons wanted to jump on them quick, get out with a win and without injuries. The game was all but over at half. Coach Jason Catron played his varsity first team one series in the third quarter, just enough time for them to tally one more score. Then, the boys that don’t see a lot of playing time took over. The “gunslinger,” Joey Caron, came out firing early and was 8-10 for 124 yards. Once again, Jade Gale was the first-half work horse, carrying the ball 15 times for 148 yards. Gale had five touchdowns on both long and short runs. Fullback Andrew Hunley carried the ball five times for 45 yards and a touchdown.Sophomore running back Jaelin Roberts had two carries good for 56 yards and a 55-yard touchdown scamper. In the receiving department Joe Vela did his part with 66 yards on four receptions. Will Galvez carried twice for 30 yards. The defense had plenty of time on the field, as the offense scored almost at will. Both offense and defense had a good night. Defensively, Brandon Albright had seven tackles, Hunley had six and one-half and Gale had six. Dave Beals had three and one-half tackles and had his first interception of the season. Both Tyler Lane and Charlie Goodwin had fumble recoveries that put the Falcons in good field position. Gale had a 48-yard kick return; Galvez had one for 27 yards. Isaac Schoeppey made good on all six of his point-after kicks and only had to punt twice all night. All in all, it was a pretty light game for the Falcons. Nov. 5Falcon Falcons 61Sand Creek Scorpions 21For the last regular season home game, the Falcons put on quite a showing by downing the Sand Creek Scorpions 61-21. Although the Falcons and Scorpions have not played each other in a number of years, they are thought of as district rivals. Again, Coach Jason Catron wanted to jump on them early and get the junior varsity players some quality snaps. Falcon scored 35 first-quarter points and 26 in the second quarter. The junior varsity players went the entire second half.Joey Caron had 193 yards on 6-10 passing with two touchdowns. Jade Gale rushed 19 times for 216 yards and four touchdowns and had a punt return of 43 yards for a touchdown. This was the second game in a row that Gale had five touchdowns. For the Falcon’s 9-1 season, Gale’s 216 yards in the Sand Creek game put him over 1,000 total yards. That is really packing the mail. Joe Vela had 42 yards receiving. Will Galvez had two receptions good for 43 yards and a touchdown. Brodie Hicks had two for 22 yards, and Zach Bagby had two catches for 87 yards and one touchdown. In the first quarter, Andrew Hunley scored on a 22-yard interception. He also had three and one-half tackles. The starters didn’t put up the big numbers because they only played the first half.Nov. 12Falcon Falcons 14Loveland 38First round 4A playoff gameThe bubble finally burst. The Falcons ran up against a Loveland football team that resembled a small college team in size. They were kind of like my Nebraska Cornhuskers – they grow those boys big up north. Up front, the Loveland boys probably averaged between 230 and 240 pounds, and their running back was 6 feet 1 inch and weighed about 235 to 240 pounds. When he got rolling, he was tough to bring down. Physically, the Falcons were just mismatched. When Loveland lined up on offense, it was just 3 yards and a cloud of dust. They controlled the ball and the clock most of the game. They only attempted one pass the entire game. To the Falcons’ credit, they never faltered or gave up. They played Falcon football just as their coaches had instilled in them. Joey Caron had his biggest passing game of the year, with 15 of 31 tosses for 235 yards with one interception. When you put the ball in the air 31 times during the course of a ball game trying to play catch up, it is not that unusual to throw an interception or two. Jade Gale carried the ball 32 times – good for 198 yards and two touchdowns. What a way to end a high school career. When Keenan Britton went down midway through the season, Gale stepped right in without missing a beat and carried the load for the Falcons. Isaac Schoeppey kicked both extra points. The receiving core had a pretty good night, all things considered. Sophomore Brody Hicks caught four passes good for 98 yards. This young man is the real deal and will be among the leaders before he graduates. Joe Vela had five catches for 73 yards; Will Galvez caught three for 12 yards; Zach Bigby was two for 35 yards and David Beals grabbed one for 18 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Brandon Albright had nine tackles and Gale had six. The team this year had good senior leadership and helped groom the underclassmen for the coming years. There was no finger pointing when they were down, and no animosity among the backs because one back might have gotten more carries than the rest of the team. For the first year in 4-A, a 9- 2 season is pretty darn good. It has been fun covering the Falcon football team this year, getting to know some of the coaches and players. I hope to cover them next year. My job has been easier with the help of head coach Jason Catron. I have appreciated his input, and I know he has appreciated all the support that the spectators and family and friends have shown the Falcon squad this past football season. Now that the season is finished, Vinnie Mac Sports Corner will be covering Coach Doug Ravasdy and his basketball team. See you next time!
