Since April, veterans have been working on bringing a VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post to Falcon, and Julie Robertson, an Air Force veteran, has been leading the effort, according to an Aug. 3 article by Mary Shinn in The Gazette.
The Gazette reported that Robertson has seen an “outpouring of interest in recent weeks.”
“The group’s last meeting drew 38 interested people, well above the threshold of 25 to form a post, so Robertson expects the group will qualify for its official post number soon as new members get to work recruiting and fundraising for a building.”
The VFW is a place for veterans to gather and enjoy camaraderie. In The Gazette article, Robertson stated that the VFW can also help veterans apply for disability benefits at no charge and lobbies Congress on behalf of veterans.
The idea of a VFW post for the northeast portion of the county has been around for a few years, Robertson said.
The next organizational meeting for the new post was Aug. 29 at the Falcon Fire Protection District’s station at 7030 Old Meridian Road.
The NFH will follow up with the plans for a new post in the October issue. If anyone has more information, please email marylounfh@gmail.com
