Valentine’s victims – Blind date: first and last

I was only 16 when a friend of mine wanted me to go on a blind date with a college guy so we could double date and attend the homecoming dance the following week. She neglected to tell me she tried to fix this guy up with a few different girls. The guy never liked the previous “fix-ups,” and didn’t want to spend any money to go to a high-school dance, so he didn’t shower or change his work clothes before our date. He thought, “I won’t like this girl either and I’ll probably never see her again,” and he was almost right. When I walked into the room, he circled around me as if he was inspecting meat on a hook, and then announced, “She’ll do.” I just looked over at my girlfriend and glared. I spent the rest of the evening fighting him off. Plus, he drove a car that couldn’t go 10 miles without stopping to add a quart of oil.My friend pleaded with me to go to the homecoming dance with him anyway. I told her to forget it, but after persistent nagging, I gave in saying, “OK, but this is the last time.” On the second date, he was a changed man, arriving at my door all cleaned up and acting very respectable. That was 39 years ago. Happy Valentines Day, Mike!
