Dr. David Himmelstein, the chief of the division of social and community medicine at Cambridge Hospital, a professor at Harvard Medical School and the co-founder of Physicians for National Health Insurance, will present “National Health Insurance: Liberal Benefits and Conservative Spending” on Sept. 30 at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs campus.Himmelstein’s research is focused on access to care, quality of care in for-profit settings, medical bankruptcies, administrative costs of medical care and the feasibility of national health insurance.The overall theme of the seminar is “Colorado’s Future: Can Affordable Health Care be Quality Care?” The event is sponsored by various health care and nonprofit organizations, including local participants Memorial and Penrose-St. Francis hospitals, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Kaiser Permanente, and the Center for Colorado Policy Studies and the Colorado Institute of Public Policy.The 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. program also includes health care professionals from Denver and Colorado Springs, including Carole Schoffstall, the dean of the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Marcy Morrison, the mayor of Manitou and the former chair of the House health committee.On Thurs. evening, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. Dr. Himmelstein will present a free seminar on “Health Care Reform: A Medical Emergency” at the Temple Shalom on South Union.For more information, call 719-262-4021 or e-mail ccps@uccs.edu.
