Twenty things to do with your children instead of watching TV

One of the problems we encounter in our home with our young children is the question “can we watch TV now?” Some days it seems as if that is all they want to do. Some of us as parents are guilty of too much TV, and while deep down we know that TV consumption should be limited more, it is hard to do. With the hot temperatures we have been having this past month, it is almost too hot to do much of anything outdoors for any extended period. So, I have compiled a list of 20 things to do with your children instead of watching TV:

  • Take a walk
  • Ride your bikes
  • Read a book
  • Play a board game
  • Play outside
  • Go swimming
  • Bake cookies
  • Color, paint, draw
  • Plant flowers or a garden
  • Put a puzzle together
  • Scavenger/ treasure hunt in the neighborhood or your backyard
  • Play catch or shoot hoops
  • Find a new park
  • Turn on the music and dance
  • Teach your child a new sport
  • Invite a friend over, even at the last minute
  • Make a fort with pillows and blankets
  • Have a water balloon fight
  • Make your own obstacle course
  • Blow bubbles
If the zombie-like stare they acquire while watching TV isn’t bad enough, TV has been shown to make kids fat! A typical child is exposed to 40,000 hours of candy, soda, cereal and fast food commercials a year. These ads determine the kind of foods children ask for. By limiting TV time, you can reduce the influence of others through advertising and increase your child’s level of exercise and creativity. Studies have shown that cutting back on children’s TV time has resulted in their weight loss. Reducing television time also helps families bond, and we all know how quickly they grow up!Palmer Chiropractic494-1395www.palmer-chiropractic.com
