The garden club is blooming

Update on the Falcon Garden Club

By Coben Scott

The Falcon Garden Club, a local charitable organization, continues to expand, with a venue change for its monthly meetings.

The club met March 21 at the Woodmen Hills Recreation Center, its new location after outgrowing previous meeting spaces at the High Prairie Library and Falcon Fire Station 3. The decision to relocate was a key topic during the meeting and was met with unanimous support from attendees. One member noted the recreation center offers a more central location for the Falcon community.

Attendees were greeted with a sign-in table and membership information upon arrival. Annual dues are $15 for two people, reduced to $7.50 after June.

Club President Maureen Borgia led the meeting, which included a discussion of upcoming summer events. Members briefly reviewed plans for the annual garden sale, scheduled for June 6. The group also shared questions and concerns about topics such as soil composition, acidity and the effects of an unusually warm winter on this year’s growing season.

Each meeting features a guest presentation. This month’s speaker was Kirby Thompson, owner of Britton Nursery. Thompson shared the history of his family business and discussed how the nursery developed its niche in perennial flowers — plants that return each year. He also answered questions from members about gardening challenges and strategies for the upcoming season.

Following the presentation, members participated in a seed swap.

Borgia said the club’s steady growth has been a positive development.

“It’s been a steady growth, but it’s great,” she said. “It’s a big mix of people. We all have our different voices and experiences and just enjoy helping each other out.”

The Falcon Garden Club meets at the Woodmen Hills Recreation Center on the third Saturday of each month, excluding June, July and August — and December. (see Community Calendar for details)
