In the 21 years of its existence, Safe Passage has seen 17,000 child abuse cases come through its doors. Last year alone, they saw 800 children under the ages of 18 who had faced horrible circumstances. ìSafe Passage gives abused children a voice and enables the healing process by acting as a single source of contact for medical, investigative and legal services.î They now have both a nurse and a doctor available for medical exams. In a non-threatening environment, trained interviewers speak with the abused children to help them reveal their situation. Many of the children cannot go back to their home, so Safe Passage gives them a new backpack with new clothes and other items. Each year the Exchange Club goes shopping for needed items for these children. On Tuesday evening, the Child Abuse Prevention Committee gave Safe Passage bags of items, including boys and girls shirts, pants and socks, juice boxes; the Colorado Springs Exchange Club provided 16 pairs of jeans. Wilene expressed heartfelt thanks for all that the Exchange Club and others have given throughout the years, bringing children a sense of being ìout of harmís way.îFundraisers for High Plains Helping HandsPlease see the community calendar for details on the pizza coupons, baked good donations and yard sales.
