The American Legion chamber presentation

The American Legion was formed on March 15, 1919, by veterans of World War I for the purpose of taking care of Americaís war veterans. In short order, it became a very influential nonprofit group with national recognition. The Legionís current mission statement is ìTo enhance the well-being of America’s veterans, their families, our military, and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.î This devotion has led to several key U.S. policies and programs being enacted over the years. Here are a few notable ones:

  • U.S. Veterans Bureau ó the forerunner to the Veterans Administration
  • Flag code
  • Boys and Girls State
  • GI Bill ó later was amended to the GI Bill for Life.
  • Legion baseball
While these great accomplishments were at the national level, The American Legion is a grassroots organization. The thousands of posts around the world are embedded in our communities. This is where the majority of the work takes place for our veterans, families and communities. Many of the national ideas originate at a post as a resolution.Falconís Post is ìDane R. Balcon Post 2008.î The Post is named for Army SPC Dane R. Balcon of Falcon, who was killed in action in Iraq in 2007. The Post serves the Falcon community with programs designed for our veterans, families and the community. Here are a few:
