Teacher pay inconsistent

The National Center for Education Statistics, Schools and Staffing survey for the 2011-2012 school year found that on average 16.1 percent of teachers have jobs outside the school system to supplement their income. The survey also indicated the following:

  • Eleven states had a rate of at least one in five teachers taking on second jobs, including Colorado.
  • Maine has the highest rate, at 25.9 percent.
  • Oregon has the lowest rate, at 11.2 percent.
A report released in 2014 by the National Education Association, during the decade between the 2002-2003 school year and the 2012-2013 school year, showed the following:
  • Average salaries for public school teachers decreased by 3.2 percent.
  • Ten states realized a decline in salaries of more than 6 percent, including Colorado, with an 8 percent decline.
  • North Carolina realized the largest decline, at 15 percent.
  • Wyoming realized a salary increase of 15.2 percent over that same time period
The same NEA report for the school years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 reported the following:
  • On average, the local share of school funding increased from 43.2 percent to 43.4 percent.
  • On average, the state share of school funding stayed about the same, at 46.2 percent.
  • On average, the federal share of school funding decreased from 10.6 percent to 10.3 percent.
  • Colorado ranked 32 in funding from the state government and 37 in funding from the federal government in the 2011-2012 school year.
  • Colorado ranked 32 in funding from the state government and 34 in funding from the federal government in the 2012-2013 school year.
