Students host annual Thanksgiving dinner for seniors

Middle school students from the Patriot Learning Center in Falcon School District 49 hosted the eighth annual Thanksgiving Feast for the Falcon Senior Services group Nov. 19. Students were paired with a senior, whom they escorted into the PLCís gym, where the festivities were held.Kim Brown, language arts and social studies teacher at PLC, coordinated the event. She said it was a success, with more than 30 seniors in attendance. Families from the school donated and prepared the food, and students helped seniors fill their plates before they sat down together to turkey and all the trimmings.Before dinner, the Falcon High School Junior ROTC presented the colors.Seniors John and Carol Hopple said this was their first time attending the Thanksgiving Feast. ìWe were not expecting it to be so nice, and it is very community-oriented,î Carol Hopple said.Joe Najar, eighth-grade student at PLC, said this was his third year participating in the feast. ìI love it,î he said. ìI want to keep doing it as long as possible.îBrown said the feast is a departure from the typical school day for everyone, adding that the ìstudents shine when they are around the seniors.î
