Student math club heading to national competition

Six gifted and talented third through fifth graders were honored May 16 during an assembly at Liberty Tree Academy, an El Paso County School District 49 kindergarten through 12th grade charter school. The team won a state championship in an international math league, MathLeague.org, and is heading to the national championship in Houston in June.

Mary Tafoya, math intervention/coach at LTA said the state competition and others throughout the school year were done virtually. “Only the top 20 scores in the state receive placement,” Tafoya said. The students are scored in their grade level.

Tafoya said, “The math club Olympians are required to do prep math work and to challenge their skills throughout the school year. During club meetings, new and more advanced math skills and materials are introduced in order to give students a better edge during competition.”
