Springs promotes education about developmental disabilities

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day is Sept. 1. Eight Colorado Springs sites will provide education and information about developmental disabilities, highlighting ways in which developmentally disabled people enhance the community. Visitors to the sites at Acacia Park, the Antlers Hilton/Palmer Terrace, Pikes Peak Library District branches and the Sky Sox Security Service Field will be able to interact with people with developmental disabilities and observe various presentations and productions.A feature presentation by the First Lady of Colorado, Frances Owens, begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Security Service Field. The day culminates with a baseball game between the Sky Sox and the Sacramento River Cats, with a fireworks spectacular capping the evening.Agencies planning the event include The Resource Exchange, The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region, Carmel Community Living Corp., Cheyenne Village, Community Intersections, Community Link, Community Outreach Inc., Connecting with Community, Dungarvin of Colorado, Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs, Mosaic, REM Colorado and Special Families/Special Kids. The sponsors include the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado, the Sky Sox/Security Services Field, The Gazette and the Pikes Peak Library District.
