Spring means that high school baseball is in full swing. Despite the immense amount of talent in D 49, this is one of the only sports in the district that hasnít gone to the playoffs. Vista Ridge High School is sitting at 4-10 and dead last in the Pikes Peak 4A League. Sand Creek High School is at 5-9 and sixth in the league. The Falcon High School Falcons are 7-7 and fourth in the league, and could still be in playoff contention. Colt Martin, a sophomore second baseman for Sand Creek, said, ìI feel that our team has a lot of talent, but we havenít been able to put it all together.îAlthough the districts overall play has been poor, the teams are close in talent, making for exciting rivalry games. On April 15, Sand Creek squared off against Vista Ridge. The Scorpions took an early lead and were up 4-1 through six innings. In the seventh inning, Vista Ridge stormed back and tied the game at 4-4 to force extra innings. The Wolves played stiff defense in the top of the eighth and held the Scorpions scoreless. Vista Ridge then came through huge in the clutch and hit a walk for the win.Two days later, Vista Ridge traveled to Sand Creek for a rematch. Similar to the first game, Sand Creek got off to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. This time, Sand Creek didnít make the same mistakes and held on to the lead to win the game 4-2. The rivalry games arenít over. Falconís final two are against the Scorpions; and, if Falcon wants any chance at the playoffs, these games will be vital.Track and fieldFalcon High School has had two top-10 finishers in three meets, including a fifth-place finish at the Thunder Ridge Invitational where the 4X100 relay team placed third. Star football player, Kalen Ballage, placed third in the 100m. Vista Ridge has run in five meets and has three top-10 finishes. Sand Creek has run in six meets and has placed in the top-10 in all of them.
