Special BOE meeting ñ June 27

At the second special meeting in one week, the Falcon School District 49 Board of Education unanimously approved the 2012-2013 budget, which allows for a (roughly) 2 percent pay raise for staff, as well as a one-time bonus for returning staff members.The board also unanimously approved several contracts for 2012-2013:

  • Pike’s Peak Community College
  • Head Start to continue providing preschool services through Evans and Falcon Elementary schools
  • Waxie Sanitary Supply
Chuck Irons, board secretary, asked Brett Ridgway, chief business officer, if the local vendor, Waxie Sanitary Supply, was more cost-effective than a national vendor. Tammy Harold, president, said the person hired for the procurement position could follow up on the cost effectiveness next year.Other action items approved:
  • A food service supply agreement for the Head Start programs at Evans and Falcon Elementary schools
  • The 2012-2013 fiscal year budgets for the charter schools in the district
  • Including the Americans with Disabilities Act in the Family Medical Leave policies
Don Begier, executive officer for education services, updated the board on technology within the district. He said the project with Comcast to increase the district’s bandwidth is on schedule. If everything runs smoothly, the target date for completion is July 31, Begier said.With the approval of the lease for the Apple MacBook Pro computers and iPads from the June 25 meeting, training will begin on those machines. Twenty people at a time will spend one day training on the machines; the cost was built into the leases, he said. ìIt’s going to fundamentally change the way we educate our kids in D 49,î Begier said.Marie LaVere-Wright, board treasurer, asked Begier about the old computers. Begier said once the staff is comfortable with the new computers, the old ones will go to Colorado Computer Support for repurposing.The discussion item regarding revisions to the district wellness policy was moved to the next board meeting, which is July 19.
