Social media conversations have implied that crime in the Falcon area has been on the rise; however, Jacqueline Kirby, public information officer with the El Paso County Sheriffís Office, said statistics show that, overall, the crime rate has not increased from last year.ìThe vandalism of cars has slowed down,î Kirby said. ìThe suspects in that rash of vandalism have been identified and charged. Residents should not see more of that anytime in the near future.îKirby said isolated cases of vandalism might be linked, but the actual cases appear more widespread because of all the discussions on social media websites, like Facebook.Kirby also said that in the second week of July, the sheriffís office had responded to five burglaries in the Falcon area. ìWe are very aggressively working that, and have some pretty substantial leads,î she said.Besides the vandalism and burglaries, community members on social media websites were discussing an incident where a vehicle with two males inside wearing ski masks approached young children. The males allegedly asked the kids if they wanted to get shot, and then sprayed the kids with silly string. Kirby said she had no knowledge of that incident.ìIf people donít report it, we canít track it,î she said. ìThat would be a very scary scenario, and itís important for people to know that, if things like that are happening, they need to call the sheriffís office through the non-emergency line. If people are seeing crimes happen or things happen that they are concerned about, just call us; and weíll get a deputy out there.î
