Senior prom – with a twist

On May 27, Patriot Learning Center middle school students honored the 60-something-plus crowd in Falcon with a “senior” prom.Jenny Olson, mathematics teacher at PLC, said the middle school students have adopted the Falcon Senior Services organization as a service project.The students help the Falcon senior group with their fundraising efforts, such as the group’s car rally and recent Tupperware party. Last Thanksgiving, students hosted a dinner for the seniors and helped them with their Christmas decorations during the holidays, Olson said.The students also clean up Meridian Road near their school under the county’s Adopt a Road program; they volunteer at the Marion House Soup Kitchen in Colorado Springs; they write letters to soldiers in Iraq; and the students make quilts and pillows for TESSA, a nonprofit group providing services for victims of domestic violence.”It’s our way of connecting the students with the community,” Olson said.Seniors Bea and Ron Berry wowed the audience by dancing rock ‘n’ roll to a Chuck Berry tune, and Darlene Williams and Jim Rosche demonstrated country swing.Proving that it’s never too late to be king and queen of the prom, both couples were honored with paper crowns.Patriot Learning Center is a Falcon School District 49 public school housed in the old Falcon Middle School on Swingline Road. The school was created in 2008 to provide an alternative learning environment for students struggling in a traditional classroom setting.
