Noel Billups wanted to play the drums. He decided to join Horizon Middle School’s band when he entered sixth grade, but the band director already had numerous percussion players so he asked Billups to try the trombone. A few years later, Billups is one of 120 high school seniors performing at the High School All American Bowl Game Jan. 8 at the Alamodome in San Antonia, Texas.Billups, now a senior at Sand Creek High School, was given an opportunity to perform as part of the Colorado Ambassadors of Music Concert Band last summer. He traveled throughout Europe, performing in cities like London, Paris and Venice.Unlike the European tour, Billups’ trip to San Antonio as part of the U.S. Army All American High School Marching Band will be all expenses paid. The event will be televised on ESPN. “I am ecstatic about being able to play with other talented high school musicians from around the country, learning a lot of new things and techniques, making new friends and overall, having a great experience,” Billups said.Aside from his participation in the marching band, Billups also participates in the Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble and an “indie” rock band, playing the keyboards. He is also a member of the Chamber Singers and A cappella.Next year, Billups will attend the University of Northern Colorado, where he wants to study education and music composition.
