El Paso County Colorado District 49

SEAC holds first social event

The Falcon School District 49ís Special Education Advisory Committee held its first social Sept. 15 at Springs Ranch Elementary School.ìBecause of the way the classes are set up, by law thereís not a lot of information sharing, so sometimes I think itís hard to make connections with other kiddos in a studentís class,î said Alicia Stier, SEAC co-chairwoman. ìThere are a lot of people who would like to meet other people and find support.îFood was provided by Tucanos Brazilian Grill, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Southern Maid Donuts and Mimiís CafÈ. Other local businesses provided gift cards or services for a raffle, including Safeway, Falcon Auto, Target, Starbucks and The Cupcake Doctor. In addition to the food and prizes, guests had access to both playgrounds at Springs Ranch Elementary, one of which is entirely ramp-accessible. Face painting was also provided, and attendees were encouraged to mingle and socialize with one another. In all, more than 125 people attended the event, Stier said. ìWhatís really great about this is that there are probably as many teachers as parents, which I think really says a lot about the staff in our district,î she said.Stier said the event went well and she received feedback for improving it next year.ìWeíre hopefully looking at doing this once a year,î said Ron Good, SEAC co-chairman. ìWe want to do it closer to the beginning of school.î
