Sand Creek archery: A family sport

Competitive sports aren’t the only game in town this winter. If you walk into the Sand Creek gymnasium, you will hear the whizzing of arrows and see the smiles of ecstatic students learning the art of archery.Sand Creek’s physical education class started a three-week archery program through the adaptive physical education course, which is geared toward special needs students. They began learning archery during the first two weeks of November, and, after a short Thanksgiving break, the students picked back up again for another week. Although the course is short, the students still have a chance to have fun and experience the sport. The kids exercise and practice during the P.E. class and even stay after school a few times during the week to master the ins and outs of archery. The class is run by special education teacher Abby Rowley. She is aided by many volunteers that come to supervise and teach the students. Teaching archery isn’t easy. That’s why they brought in an expert. Doug Moore, a retired Special Forces Green Beret, volunteers his time from the Academy Archery Club and shares his knowledge with the energetic students. All of the kids actively participate in the program, and no matter what their disability, the students excel. If you or anyone in your family is interested in archery classes, contact the Air Force Academy clubhouse at 719-333-3557 or visit www.academyarcheryclub.org for more information.
