Salmonella outbreak

Under the direction of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, public health officials have been investigating outbreaks of Salmonella infections reportedly associated with two brands of peanut butter: Peter Pan and Great Value, with a product code beginning ë2111.People were asked to discard the products.In mid-February, 10 cases of Salmonella had been reported in Colorado ñ one in El Paso County. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.Most people infected with Salmonella develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after exposure, and the illness lasts from four to seven days. Most people recover without treatment. However, more serious cases may require hospitalization. People at risk for severe illness include the elderly, infants and those with compromised immune systems.Nationwide, the CDC reported 290 outbreak-related cases of Salmonella from 39 states, dating back to August 2006. To date, 44 people were hospitalized.
