Pups beware: No leash and you could be in jail

Pets in the unincorporated areas of El Paso County (that means Falcon) may lose a little bit of freedom if the county commissioners say so.On Dec. 9, the El Paso Board of County Commissioners heard the first reading of the proposed resolution to amend the Pet Animal Control/Dog Licensing rules and regulations in unincorporated El Paso County. The board also set the date for the second reading and adoption for Dec. 20 at 9 a.m. in the third floor hearing room at 27 East Vermijo Street in downtown Springs. The commissioners have the authority to provide for the control of dogs and other pets in the unincorporated areas of the county. In Oct. 2002, they adopted a resolution that requires the control and licensing of pets. There was a dog control resolution prior, but it was comprehensively rewritten in 2002. The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region would like to revise and update this two-year-old set of rules. The amendment will update certain aspects of the regulations, such as requiring cats to be vaccinated against rabies. It also may allow animal control officers to write warnings when dealing with noisy animals.
