Five fifth-graders ñ known as the Fab Five ñ from Meridian Ranch International School are on a mission to share their love of sports with other kids by hosting a sports camp. The ìfiveî are Kimmy McKinney, Greer Garcher, Shaun MacDonald, Creighton Werner and Bailey Carson. Their mission statement: ìOur mission is to keep kids healthy by teaching†sports that they love and want to try. We want to combine health and fun through Kids Sports Camp.î Creighton Werner reaffirmed the mission. ìSports are one thing that we all love,î he said. ìWe want to set a statement as we leave fifth grade.îThe idea to do something to benefit their community, as well as their school, stemmed from their fifth-grade teacher, Amy Levi, who initiated the Passion Project, which encourages students to get involved with something they are passionate about. ìThey research their favorite passion, and they can present it in multiple ways: story, play or however they want,î said Patricia Petree, Leviís student teacher. Petreeís role is to listen to the kidsí ideas and guide them. ìThe Fab Fiveís idea has really taken off,î Petree said. ìAnd it has exploded not only in their community but also the school.îThe camp is limited to the first100 who sign up, and open to kindergarten through fourth-grade students from Meridian Ranch International School, but Kimmy McKinney said if a fifth-grader is struggling with a sport, he or she can sign up, too. The camp is focused on four sports: flag football, basketball, baseball and soccer. It takes place May 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Meridian Ranch International School. All proceeds raised from the camp will be donated to the to the MRIS physical education department. The fee is $20, which includes a T-shirt. For more information or to sign up, visit http://kidssportscamps.yolasite.com or email mriskidssportscamp@gmail.com. Registration is also available at MRIS.
