Monkey Business

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING:Customs officials in Bangladesh were suspicious of a cargo container being shipped by rail through Dhaka. The contents were declared to be scrap metal, but actually contained a Mercedes and other luxury cars, big-screen TVs and high-end kitchen appliances. The National Board of Revenue brought in bulldozers to shred it all into scrap. (Reuters) … And one hopes they then packed it all back into the container and sent it on its way.CANADA’S MOST WANTED:Donald Johnson, a defense attorney in Cornwall, Ont., Canada, woke up in the middle of the night to noises from another bedroom in his house. His wife called police while he chased after the burglar. He tackled the intruder, disarmed him of a knife, and then realized he knew the man: one of his own clients. “I guess he didn’t know it was my house,” Johnson said. After booking, police asked Scott Best, 34, if he’d like to call a lawyer. He asked if he could call Johnson, but officers apparently convinced him to call someone else. Johnson agreed it “wouldn’t have been a good idea” to call him. (Canadian Press) …On the other hand, he was already up.From wwwthisistrue.com.County commissioners “monkey’ing” around:The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution last week declaring June as “the month to celebrate fathers and the 0th anniversary of the Center on Fathering. During the same session, the commissioners signed resolutions recognizing the retirement of three county employees. It seems our county commissioners are always declaring this and congratulating that. Hmmm … good business or monkey business – $60,000-plus a year for each county commissioner’s salary (except Bruce who doesn’t claim a salary) – good use of time or monkey business?RUMORS:

  • The Banning Lewis Ranch public relations people are promising to release a “Frequently Answered Questions” document as soon as they get approval from the developers. Meanwhile, we’ve heard the developers are thinking of creating a wildlife habitat in place of residential development! (right!)
  • Is there a halt to further plans for the Falcon Highlands development project because of water issues?
  • Twenty-five to 40 manufactured homes on south Meridian (behind Falcon Veterinary)?
  • Who said this? Douglas Bruce will see it my way (in support of the D 49 mil levy), if we just get a chance to sit down and talk.
