Cody Hancock loves horses. He also likes to help other people, especially younger kids. The latter earned Hancock a leadership role in a school program called WEB ñ Where Everybody Belongs. WEB is a mentoring program designed to help incoming sixth graders adjust and feel welcome as they enter middle school for the first time. Eighth graders are nominated by their teachers and chosen to mentor the younger students ñ and they are available for them all year long. ìIf they need help in one of their classes, they can come to us,î Hancock said. ìEven to just have someone to talk to about really anything.îHancockís mentoring and leadership skills have been boosted by his involvement in 4-H and as the president of the Eastern Plains Reining Horse Youth Association. ìHe is really active through his reining group doing community service and mentoring the younger kids in the club who are starting reining,î said his mom, Kathy Hancock. ìHe does the same thing through 4-H.îAs a competitor in reining horse competitions, Hancock was in the Mountain States Regional finals in September in Salina, Utah, where he placed eighth out of 30 in his division. He also participated in the National Reining Horse Association’s North American Adequan Affiliate finals in Oklahoma City, Okla. He placed 28th out of 56.Hancock is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, and also plays football. He will enter high school this fall, where he plans to continue helping people.
