At age 85, Grace Hudson has lived in two foreign countries and two different states, but sheís called Falcon her home for the last 37 years.Hudson was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1921. Her mother worked for a tailor of menís clothing, and her father was an ironmonger, a name the Scottish used in reference to a hardware store, she said. When she was 3 years old, Hudsonís family left Scotland and moved to Windsor, Ontario, where they remained until her father found a job in Detroit, Mich. ìHe had heard that Henry Ford was paying $5 a day, and I guess that sounded like a lot of money,î she said. Her father traveled back and forth between the United States and Canada until the entire family received quotas to become U.S. citizens. In 1927, they moved to Detroit. ìWe lived there all the rest of our lives, until I got married,î Hudson said.Hudsonís next-door neighbor introduced her to Jack Hudson. ìMy husband Ö introduced our neighbor, Bob, to a girl, and Bob felt he should return the favor,î she said. ìSo he introduced me to Jack.îIn 1941, Jack was called to the service and sent to the Aleutian Islands. ìWe knew each other only nine months before he had to leave,î Hudson said. When Jack Hudson returned to the United States on a 30-day leave, he proposed and they decided to get married before he set off again. ìBelieve me, my folks wanted me to have a white wedding and so scrambling Ö you couldnít get anything you wanted at any old time, but I got a white dress and had a white wedding,î Hudson said. They were married Feb. 19, 1944.After a brief honeymoon in Florida, Jack was sent to India while Hudson returned to live with her family in Detroit. The two newlyweds wrote letters. ìHe was a budding author, and he liked to write,î Hudson said. ìThey were very descriptive Ö and loving.îJack Hudson returned in 1946. He and his bride took up residence in the upstairs area of her familyís home. Shortly after, their first child ñ a boy ñ was born, and they bought their first home.Over the next eight years, the Hudsons had two more children ñ a daughter and another son. Jack Hudson took a job in manufacturing, while Grace Hudson stayed at home with their children. In 1965, Jack died when he had surgery for an emergency appendectomy. ìHe didnít survive it,î Grace said. ìIt was a shock.îWith all the kids still living at home, Hudson took a job doing secretarial and accounting work. After living her entire life near Detroit, Hudsonís life changed when she visited a friend in Colorado Springs. ìA friend of mine moved out [here], and I just loved it,î she said.In 1970, Hudson packed her bags and moved to the Springs. She became a secretary with Colorado Interstate Gas.ìI found a Realtor and he brought me out here [Falcon] to show me his property,î she said. ìAnd I saw this place with that view of that mountain Ö and it was the perfect view.î She bought the home in 1972 and has been there ever since.Hudson retired from Colorado Interstate Gas in 1976. Since then, she said she enjoys gardening and bicycling, sort of. ìI have a bicycle,î she said. ìBut I donít get on it. I just look at it.îShe also had traveled a bit throughout the state and enjoys the Colorado outdoors. ìIíve gone fishing in quite a few places,î Hudson said. And sheís tried fencing, tennis and ice-skating.ìI like to keep myself active.îA little more on Grace HudsonWhat is your favorite television program(s)?I like my ìsoapies.î I watch about two and a half of them. It started when I sat down to watch the noon news. I like the clean air. What is your favorite memory? My husband: He was a great person, and everybody liked him. I just feel bad that my kids didnít get to spend more time with him.
