The American Legion Post 2008 awarded three U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) scholarships, totaling $2,000, to local graduating high school seniors. Recipients from Sand Creek and Vista Ridge high schoolsí JROTC were judged on scholastic achievement, leadership, character, citizenship, community activities, work experience; and content and quality of a 600-word essay. Since Falcon High School did not submit applicants, their scholarship went to Vista Ridge.Scholarship winners:Sand Creek High SchoolJalen Criss ó $1,000Vista Ridge High SchoolBentura Romero ó $500Joe Tran ó $500Winners were announced during each schoolís JROTC award ceremonies.This is the first year American Legion Post 2008 offered scholarships to these schools. They hope to do it again next year and award one scholarship to each school. Scholarships of up to $1,000 are granted based on merit and a written essay. Applicants must take part in the schoolís JROTC program as well. The purpose of the JROTC program is to instill in students the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. Winners do not necessarily need to be military bound.Congratulations Jalen, Ben and Joe!
