Legion offers junior shooting program

American Legion 2008 offers many benefits to the community. One is a junior shooting sports program called Young Guns, an eight-week course on air rifle Chapter A marksmanship training to children ages 12 to18 who are currently enrolled in school.The program is open to six to eight students per session and has been serving Falcon for about six years. It is taught by National Rifle Association certified rifle instructors or certified range safety officers who are former military and American Legion members.The NRA sponsors the program and annually donates equipment and supplies. ìOur program focuses on safety first and foremost, proper shooting techniques and the proper handling of a firearm,î said James Kendig, an instructor and veteran. ìParents have told us that the basics their children have learned from our class has helped students go on to join the military and become expert shooters. We also believe it is extremely important to pass along the knowledge of our Second Amendment Constitutional privilege.îStudents are also provided with books in addition to hands-on instruction. Biographies of Olympic champions, equipment, clothing and supplies, gun safety and range commands, the operation of an air rifle, sight adjustment, scoring and quizzes complement the program.At the end of eight weeks, Papa Johnís donates pizzas for a party to celebrate students who have completed the program.The American Legion has next level competition shooting programs for children and adults, posted on The American Legion website, Facebook page and neighborhood pages in Falcon.The next session begins in September 2022.
