When school resumes, Frontier Charter Academy will be in its fifth year as a kindergarten-through-eighth grade charter school operating under Calhan School District RJ-1.Frontier Charter, 20 minutes east of Falcon, has spent part of the summer making improvements to its facilities, said Bruce Delaney, the director of Frontier Charter Academy.Teachers, parents and people in the community, including Calhan Mayor Gary Reimers and his wife, Debra, who are among the original founders of the academy, volunteered their time to make improvements to the charter school facilities. Concrete sidewalks were added to o facilitate the flow of students between parking areas and buildings; new hallway corridors and a library are new additions and offices were remodeled as well.Frontier Charter is accepting letters of enrollment from students who reside in all districts, and the staff will facilitate carpooling for out-of-the-district students. The school is licensed for 200 students and the current enrollment is about 80. There is a waiting list, however, for the full-day kindergarten program, which was added last year. Since the academy is a public school, there is no tuition.Students are required to wear uniform polo or T-shirts and appropriate jeans, pants or skirts. They attend school Tuesday through Friday; hot lunches are offered as well as bus service for students in the district. The academy uses core knowledge curriculum and maintains high academic standards. Delaney said CSAP scores have been rising steadily in FCA’s four years of existence, with most recent scores above state averages.”A lot of people don’t know that we’re here, and they are searching for an alternative,” Delaney said. “We’re only 20 minutes up the road … for those families who are really serious about a good education … for their child in a family atmosphere, isn’t it worth a 20-minute drive?”For more information, call the school office at 347-3156.
