Each March marked the anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo, a pivotal 1836 battle during the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. This March marks the 175th anniversary, and we’re still remembering the Alamo. During the battle, all but two of the Alamo’s defenders, including Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett, lost their lives. Today, the former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound in downtown San Antonio houses a museum under the care and management of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. However, the Alamo is only one of many fascinating things to do and see in this vibrant city. There’s the San Antonio River Walk, a public park that follows a loop of the San Antonio River as it flows through the downtown area. Visitors can leisurely stroll along a series of walkways lined with bars, restaurants and shops, as well as lovely plantings and towering bald cypress trees. It’s one of the best places to enjoy the city’s exciting nightlife. At Sea World San Antonio, you can see everything from sharks and penguins to flamingoes. Thrill rides include the Steel Eel and Shamu Express roller coasters, and there are exciting shows where whales, dolphins and sea lions display their talents. The Spanish Governor’s Palace is a National Historic Landmark. Furnished with Spanish Colonial pieces, it’s often called the most beautiful building in San Antonio. Take a look at the front doors, which are intricately hand-carved with symbols that are said to be the details of the history of the Spanish in America. The San Antonio Botanical Garden is 38 acres of beauty in the middle of the city. There’s a rose garden, a Japanese garden, a shade garden and seasonal displays, as well as collections of water-saving plants and ornamental grasses. The glass buildings of the Halsell Conservatory shelter specialty collections that range from cacti to tropical fruit trees. Walk along the Native Texas Trail for a look at plants that are characteristic of the ecological regions of Texas, including the Hill Country, the East Texas Piney Woods and South Texas.Wherever you go in San Antonio, be sure to seek out some of the region’s flavorful Tex-Mex cuisine, perhaps while listening to some live folklorico music. For more ideas on things to do and see while in San Antonio, contact a travel professional.
