As of Oct. 12, all 145 wind turbines that make up the Golden West Wind Farm project in Calhan are connected to the transmission lines and producing power, said David Gil, project manager with NextEra Energy Resources.Construction on the project is not yet complete, Gil said. ìWe are still doing reclamation and road work and other work here and there,î he said. Road reclamation work should be finished before the end of November.Meanwhile, residents concerned about the potential health hazards of living near the turbines have contacted the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Mike Van Dyke, chief of the Environmental Epidemiology, Occupational Health and Toxicology branch of the CDPHE, did not return phone calls. However, Mark Salley, CDPHE communications director, wrote an email response, confirming they received the requests from residents near the wind farm. ìI can confirm that we are looking into the matter (wind turbines and health issues) but have nothing to add at this time.î
