GalaxyFest sci-fi, fantasy rockets in popularity

Falcon resident Brian Swanson is out-of-this-world pleased with the record turnout of science fiction, fantasy and comic book fans at GalaxyFest 5, which was held Feb. 19 through Feb. 21 at the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs. The annual convention is part of a year-round series of events that provides a community for fans of many genres of pop-culture in the Pikes Peak region. An estimated 6,000 people attended the convention over the three days. While the other events during the year aren’t nearly as large, Swanson and partner Lynda Cink said the GalaxyFest-branded events give fans a way to meet up and express their creativity. ìGalaxyFest isn’t just sci-fi and fantasy,î Swanson said. ìWe may not be bringing in thousands of people for each of these things, but it serves a community ñ- all the pop-culture communities.îGalaxyFest also sponsors KwaziCon, a gaming convention held in October. The team hosts the Pikes Peak area support group for National Novel Writing Month in November, the Geeks Who Drink sci-fi pub trivia events at Jack Quinn Irish Pub, the First Friday Cosplay Art Walk and co-hosts the Movie Camp series at Carmike Cinema.ìThere are different things throughout the year for all of the pop-culture genres, lots of eclectic areas that don’t get serviced otherwise in the Pikes Peak region,î Swanson said. The complete calendar of ongoing events and pre-planning information for GalaxyFest 6 in February 2017 is available at http://galaxyfest.org.
