I do hope that May brings some of those afternoon showers so we can breathe a bit easier when it comes to wildfires.Speaking of wildfires, Robin Widmar has done a great job this month bringing this issue to the forefront. The April 2 fire in Falcon has certainly made residents, especially those who live in the effected areas off Highway 24, more enlightened about the realities of a wildfire. I talked to a couple of people who didnít have to evacuate, but they were close ó close enough to watch as a caravan of horse trailers and trucks moving people, pets and livestock took to the roads. Robin, who works with FFPD as well, has plenty of advice to avoid the worst outcomes of a fire.Weíve been talking about the proposed D 49 name change, and the D 49 board has been listening. Balcon Legion Post 2008 activities. Mark reminds us why we celebrate Memorial Day. Itís not about backyard barbecues and it isnít the gateway to summer. Memorial Day was first celebrated on May 30, 1868, as a day to honor Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in combat. Flowers were placed on the graves of the 20,000 soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery, after a speech by Gen. James Garfield. And 150 years later, soldiers are still dying as warring nations appear to be the norm. Since the Civil War, there have been about 1,243,980 American casualties of war or military action. (Colorado Visiting Nurses Association)So, on Memorial Day this year we can recognize those soldiers in a few different ways.
- On Memorial Day, the flag should be at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.
- Red Poppies are recognized as the Memorial Day flower, so maybe wear some poppies
- At 3 p.m. local time, Americans should pause for a moment of silence.
- Visit a cemetery, a memorial or attend a parade.
