Thank you again for your responses to our survey. We have received some interesting ideas and comments. One person said she didnít like the full-page ads in the paper, and she didnít like the subject matter of one of our advertisers. We appreciate all comments; however, we need those one-page advertisements and we accept all reasonable and ìcleanî advertisers. We just donít discriminate based on political and social issues. Stay tuned for more comments from the survey. You can still complete the survey online at http://newfalconherald.com/NEXTISSUE/NFH_Survey.php. (not sure if this is true)May is a full month. I hope it wonít be the fickle-weather month weíve had in April ó 70 degrees one day and temps like 40 the next. I do hope that May brings some of those afternoon showers so we can breathe a bit easier when it comes to wildfires.Speaking of wildfires, Robin Widmar has done a great job this month bringing this issue to the forefront. The April 2 fire in Falcon has certainly made residents, especially those who live in the effected areas off Highway 24, more enlightened about the realities of a wildfire. I talked to a couple of people who didnít have to evacuate, but they were close ó close enough to watch as a caravan of horse trailers and trucks moving people, pets and livestock took to the roads. Robin, who works with FFPD as well, has plenty of advice to avoid the worst outcomes of a fire.Weíve been talking about the proposed D 49 name change, and the D 49 board has been listening. Read Lindsey Harrisonís wrap up of the April board meeting for the latest on the boardís plans. Lindsey also has a Part 3 article on dangerous intersections in Falcon. Stay tuned for more ìpartsî ó weíll keep addressing these intersections until every concern you have sent to us is covered. To keep the talk going about preventing school shootings, Lindsey covers D 49 mental health efforts.Mark Stoller has covered Memorial Day for us with some thoughtful articles on programs for veterans and the Dane R. Balcon Legion Post 2008 activities. Mark reminds us why we celebrate Memorial Day. Itís not about backyard barbecues and it isnít the gateway to summer. Memorial Day was first celebrated on May 30, 1868, as a day to honor Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in combat. Flowers were placed on the graves of the 20,000 soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery, after a speech by Gen. James Garfield. And 150 years later, soldiers are still dying as warring nations appear to be the norm. Since the Civil War, there have been about 1,243,980 American casualties of war or military action. (Colorado Visiting Nurses Association)So, on Memorial Day this year we can recognize those soldiers in a few different ways.

  • On Memorial Day, the flag should be at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.
  • Red Poppies are recognized as the Memorial Day flower, so maybe wear some poppies
  • At 3 p.m. local time, Americans should pause for a moment of silence.
  • Visit a cemetery, a memorial or attend a parade.
Because Motherís Day is also celebrated in May, maybe you know a mom who lost a son, daughter or husband in combat. Send them a simple note to say you are thinking of them. When you are at that barbecue, make a statement about the importance of the day. Most will appreciate you for doing so.And Bill Radfordís Prairie Life is all about fencing. Be sure to read his profiles on a Black Forest artistic couple and a young entrepreneur who lives in Falcon. We would also like to invite health professionals in the area to submit articles for our health care section. If you are interested in writing an article on health care, send an email to marylou@kekotiledesigns.com.I hope you enjoy this issue, and weíll be reporting on D 49ís grads next month. Anyone interested in sending the seniors a congratulatory ad, be sure to contact our sales department.Have a great May, and weíll see you in June.– Michelle
