On Oct. 18, Bev Ordon, a good friend and a Falcon mentor and icon to many, including The New Falcon Herald team, passed away. Her son, Nick, and daughter, Kimberly, were by her side. Bevís husband, Nicholas, died in April 2010.When we started the NFH, we were lucky to find Nick and Bev Ordon. Their names were synonymous in Falcon with community service and leadership. Bev volunteered for a myriad of organizations ó as her children referenced in her obituary. She organized a Girl Scout program in Falcon, read to the students at Falcon Elementary School, served on the school board and the El Paso County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. She helped make the Falcon to Peyton trail a reality. Nick Ordon was a volunteer firefighter, and Bev was a staunch supporter of the FFPD.We got to know both of the Ordons as they helped us fill in the gaps about the history of Falcon. The Ordons were very supportive of our efforts to bring a little newspaper to Falcon in 2004. We sat in the Ordonsí living room on many occasions to pick their brains and interview one or both for articles. When Nick and Bev founded Falcon Senior Services, Bev contacted us and asked that we help spread the word. Of course, and it was such a worthy cause that we made sure they had a strong placement in the community calendar. Bev continued leading the senior services organization after her husband died. Her energy and enthusiasm was amazing, and she had great passion about pursuing an actual senior center. We can hope that someone picks up her dream and takes it to fruition. I could not be at her services because I am writing this from Seattle, but I will always be grateful to Bev and Nick Ordon. Their friendship truly helped us launch the NFH.In this monthís issue, we are beginning a series on education. Two articles this month kick off the series. Lindsey Harrison, who is our D 49 reporter, wrote an article ìUndergrad education is vital to everyoneî addressing the importance of a K-12 education. Lindsey also wrote ìIs it bullying ó or kids being kids? in an attempt to define bullying behavior from normal student conflicts. This isnít part of our series, but Jason Gray wrote an article on ìhelicopter parenting,î which is all about education as it relates to parental interference.Kathy Hareís book review is back but donít be startled by the title†ó itís not what it looks like! Enjoy stories about Falconís community events and a 16-year-old race car driver, sponsored by Total Roofing in Falcon. †We have a few Thanksgiving fun items, too. Speaking of … have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. See you in December! And please vote on Tuesday!– Michelle
