Friends of Falcon Update

By Kevin Curry

There are two important items of interest that residents will hopefully check out.

First, In previous articles, Friends of Falcon has discussed the Land Development Code and the efforts to update the LDC. This is a critically important document that governs development and land use. The effort is now in the drafting phase, which will encompass several “modules” (sections). Just this month, the first module draft was published and opened for public comment. It covers Zoning Districts and Uses. The draft is much cleaner and easier to read than the current LDC, but contains a number of provisions that Falcon area residents might find objectionable, especially in areas of approved land uses on certain residential lots (for example, approved uses for what’s currently called RR-5 would allow, by right, things like marijuana cultivation, accessory dwelling units and certain commercial activities). We at Friends of Falcon urge everyone to view the document and make your voices heard on any provisions you find objectionable or commendable. The county’s introductory page is at https://www.elpasocountyldc.com and the Module 1 draft and comment page is at https://elpasocountyldc.konveio.com/module-1-zoning-districts-uses.
Second, a separate, non-government initiative called “Our Spacious Skies” just launched, and organizers are soliciting input and participation. The project is described as a “community visioning initiative for the Pikes Peak Region” to be used as a reference by area leaders. Anyone interested in learning more should visit the initiative website at https://www.ourspaciousskies.org.
