On March 19, firefighters from the Falcon Fire Protection District joined firefighters from the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Black Forest Fire Rescue Protection District, the Wescott Fire Protection District, the Cimarron Hills Fire Protection District and Peterson Air Force Base for training at the Banning Lewis Ranch. Two of the original Banning Lewis Ranch buildings ñ a barn and log cabin that had previously been condemned ñ were used in the training exercise. The barn was burned to the ground. The cabin was filled with wooden pallets to simulate furniture and hay was set on fire to generate smoke. Three teams of firefighters practiced entering the burning cabin, conducting searches in a heavy smoke environment, putting out the fires and rescuing smoke inhalation victims. The training plan included a total burn for the cabin, but firefighters decided to save the cabin for another day.Falcon firefighters also trained the Colorado Springs Fire Department on drafting and water tender shuttle operation for rural firefighting.
