Fall is in the air, and it’s time to prepare
By Janel McNair, Emergency Preparedness and Response Program Manager
As September ushers in a season of change in Colorado, we’re greeted with shorter days, the return of school routines and a crispness in the air signaling the arrival of fall. This transitional period offers a perfect opportunity to appreciate the season’s beauty while also focusing on our preparedness. As we recognize September as National Preparedness Month, communities, families, individuals and businesses across the nation are taking proactive steps to enhance their readiness for emergencies and disasters.
Colorado’s history is marked by a range of challenges, from devastating wildfires and floods to severe weather events, including winter storms, hail and extreme heat. With this in mind, it’s important for everyone to take proactive steps to protect themselves, their families and their pets.
Here are a few essential steps to enhance your preparedness:
1. Make a plan: Develop comprehensive plans for various scenarios, including family safety, pet care, communication with loved ones and evacuation routes. Ensure that your family is familiar with these plans and practices them regularly.
2. Build a kit: Assemble a supply kit with essential items that you may need in an emergency. Prepare to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours by stocking up on food, water and other crucial supplies.
3. Stay informed: Stay updated with reliable information sources. Sign up for Peak Alerts to receive notifications about law enforcement activities, evacuation notices and other emergency situations in your area. If you have school-aged children, familiarize yourself with your school’s emergency protocols.
4. Get involved: Explore opportunities to contribute to community preparedness. Visit the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management’s website to discover ways you can participate and make a difference.
