Falcon winter sports are up and running. With new coaches in wrestling and basketball, this promises to be an amazing winter season. The state dance and cheer teams also are joining the winter sports lineup.Girls’ basketball is off to a fantastic start with a 4-1 record. Their hard work and dedication in pre-season open gyms has paid off. The Lady Falcons came out strong, taking second at the Mesa Ridge tournament, defeating Wasson twice, Sand Creek and Mesa Ridge. Many talented girls joined returning varsity seniors Jacque Roberts, Ashley Cook, Tory Eitel and Cristy Bruno. On Jan. 15, the girls will play intense district rival, Sand Creek, at Falcon High School, starting at 7 p.m.The boys’ basketball team started training long before the season began. Great things are expected from this boys’ team. Entered in a 5A tournament over the summer, they surprised everyone by taking first place. Despite a slow start, a big win over Colorado Springs Christian School kept their spirits high. With seven returning varsity players, the boys have good chemistry and strong leadership. Senior Bobby Ratterree has confidence that the team will go far this year. The next big game also is on Jan. 15 against Sand Creek at Sand Creek High School High School, starting at 7 p.m.Falcon wrestling also has started strong this season. Taking second at the annual Colorado Deaf and Blind tournament, the Falcon Wrestlers are pumped and ready to compete. Not eating to make weight is a common sight with these wrestlers; they’ll do whatever it takes to be able to get out on that mat. Senior captains Joe Richardson and Jon Gates are key leaders as they bring the intensity up not only during matches but also throughout practices. Wrestling is a vigorous and aggressive sport, and few possess the qualities it takes to be a wrestler. The Falcon will test their strength at the Jan. 15 Pueblo Central tournament.Both the state cheer and dance team participated at the state competition on Dec. 13. Having an extremely young team was a challenge this season as the state cheer team finished 20 out of 23, although performing exceptionally well. The state dance team finished eighth out of the 16 teams that competed.
