Falcon seniors get bus and fundraising boost

The effort to build a senior center in Falcon received a boost in February when El Paso County Commissioners awarded Falcon Senior Services a $50,000 community development grant.Beverly Ordon, FSS board chairman, said the group is excited. “This is the incentive we needed to energize our fundraising efforts,” she said. The proposed 6,000-square-foot senior center will sit on land leased from the Falcon Fire Protection District at the new station near Meridian Road and Stapleton Road. Construction should begin this summer, Ordon said.FSS also obtained a 10-passenger bus, with two wheelchair lifts. The bus is dispatched through Fountain Valley Senior Services and is available to Falcon and Peyton seniors who need transportation to doctor appointments and outpatient clinics, Ordon said. The bus made its first run mid-February. “Everything went as slick as could be,” Ordon said.Falcon Senior Services needs more certified drivers. With more drivers, Ordon said she hopes to expand services to include grocery shopping and transporting seniors to FSS monthly luncheons.Seniors who would like to schedule bus transportation can call 719-520-6473.
