On Jan. 20, almost 90 people defied brutal winter weather to celebrate the newest Lions Club in District 6 Southeast.Lions came, not only from Colorado Springs, but also from Red Feather Lakes near Ft. Collins; from Loveland, Ft. Morgan, Platteville, Pueblo and CaÒon City. They convened at the Antler Creek Golf Course restaurant in Falcon, where they enjoyed a warm fire, social hour, a silent auction and dinner before the formal ceremonies.The Falcon Lions Club is sponsored by the 67-year-old Calhan Lions. The Falcon club is the 40th in the southeast district.Vice District Governor Monty Whitney and his wife, Betty, have nurtured the club, which had its beginnings last spring, to a current membership of 46.Leaders are Joe Boehringer, president; Don Schrecengost, secretary; Jeff Boyes; treasurer; Denise Keiley, membership chairwoman andfirst vice president. Second vice president is Sam Leffler, with board directors Rob Dalzell, Roger Condie and Ned Lewis.Falcon Lions will conduct an ongoing food and coat drive under the leadership of Theresa Saldivia.Speakers at the ceremony included the international director, Lion Ken Schwols of the Poudre Valley Lions, and the district governor, Tom Tucker of the Pueblo Charter Club. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Calhan Lion Bob Selle served as the master of ceremonies.Presidents of various clubs throughout the district presented Falcon Lions with cash donations for seed money for their administrative fund. The silent auction, featuring a diversity of items solicited from the community and Lionsí members, provided additional funds for the club.By taking the oath of membership, Falcon Lions joined the wordís largest service organization, with more than 135 million members in 45,000 clubs in 200 countries.While each club is free to identify the needs of its individual community, the thrust of Lionsí service endeavors is related to eyesight. The goal of aiding the blind and vision impaired and stopping preventable blindness became a passion of the Lions clubs in 1925, when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become ìknights of the blind.îThe Lions motto is ìWe Serve.î(See Community Calendar for more information on the club.)
