El Paso County Fair celebrates 119 years

The El Paso County Fair will open July 13 with a full schedule of events and activities for everyone. The fair has come a long way since its beginnings in 1905 when farmers arrived at Calhan’s country schoolyard by horseback and covered wagons to celebrate a potato harvest. Events and entertainment were impromptu and included a horse relay race.

The fair grew every year after 1905; and, by the late 1920s, permanent land had been donated. Fast forward through several decades and the permanent fairgrounds have plenty of parking for visitors who drive cars; the featured food is no longer baked potatoes and beans; and activities and entertainment offer something for everyone. There are rodeos, bull-riding, car races, an arts and crafts market, poker tournament, car show, demolition derby, animal petting zoos and concerts, to name a few.

Admission prices vary for adult, youth, seniors and military. Pricing can be found on the fair’s website: https://www.elpasocountyfair.com/p/fair-information
