Did You Know?

In 1895, Leadville was home to the largest building made out of ice in North America. The ice-made building was shaped like a medieval castle and covered more than 3 acres, with towers as high as 90 feet. Two ballrooms and a 16,000-square-foot skating rink were part of the building. Leadville’s Ice Palace opened Jan. 1, 1896, but closed two months later because of unseasonably warm weather.†Coloradoís youngest prisoner was 11-year-old Antone Woode, convicted in 1893 for murdering a neighbor. He served 12 years.†The United States federal government owns more than one-third of the land in Colorado.
