D 49 renews principals’ contracts

The Falcon School District 49 Board of Education met April 22 in a special board meeting and approved contract renewals for two high school principals – Mike Collins of Sand Creek High School and Sandy Collins of Vista Ridge High School. According to the district’s statement, both principals will continue in their current positions through the 2009-2010 school year under their respective plans of action. The board’s move is the culmination of a six-week saga that began when both principals were told their contracts would not be renewed. Sandy Collins said the district told them they were moving in a different direction but did not provide the principals with further details.District parents, students, teachers and staff rallied in support of the Collinses at the March 17 board meeting, and the board of education agreed to hold off before taking any official action.Since then, the Collinses’ supporters have been watching the board’s agenda closely and waiting for them to follow through with the contract renewals. Supporters alleged that the principals were removed from the agenda several times.D 49 spokeswoman Amanda Mountain wrote in an e-mail that contract approval was delayed to allow members of the district administration time to formulate a plan of action for each principal.”Our district has faced many challenges this past year and we are eager to move forward, continuing our focus on serving the students and families of D-49,” said board president Anna Bartha, in a released statement. “We’re also looking forward to hiring a new superintendent who will help lead this district into the future.”
