Falcon School District 49 has been awarded $100,000 to help support the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) pre-K-12 initiative. Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet awarded the appropriations dollars to the district through the recently approved 2010 federal budget. The district will use the funds to strengthen the foundation of the STEM initiative at three STEM focus schools: Odyssey Elementary School, Skyview Middle School and Vista Ridge High School. The funds will build on programs in place such as Engineering is Elementary (featured in the Wall Street Journal), Gateway to Technology and Project Lead the Way.D 49 is partnering with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Center for STEM education as well as the Museum of Science and the National Center for Technological Literacy, both in Boston, to develop cutting edge curricula for the three STEM focus schools.
