On Nov. 15, the Colorado Court of Appeals held its fall ìCourts in the Communityî event at Falcon High School in Falcon School District 49. The Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals developed the ìCourts in the Communityî program May 1, 1986, to give high school students a first-hand look at how the stateís judicial system works.Cheryl Goodyear-DeGeorge, FHS principal, said Falcon High School was the only school in the Colorado Springs area selected for the programís fall session.Students from the schoolís senior United States government classes observed as the judges, Daniel M. Taubman, Stephanie Dunn and Karen M. Ashby, heard two cases. Afterward, the students could ask questions of the judges and the attorneys arguing the cases.Taubman explained the proceedings, and said, ìWe selected these cases because we felt that you would find them interesting. The cases involve real people and real legal issues.îFollowing the proceedings, Taubman said the judges would provide written opinions on how the cases should be decided, but would not make an official decision until later.Goodyear-DeGeorge said it was an honor to have the program at her school. ìIt is really exciting to see the process in action,î she said.
