Colleges court Falcon High athletes

On April 9, during a ceremony at the Falcon High School Media Center, five Falcon senior athletes signed letters of intent to play sports at various colleges.The Falcon athletic staff, coaches and parents were present as Andy Franko, interim athletic director, congratulated the seniors.Amber Wilmore, a Lady Falcons exceptional basketball player, will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. “Amber was determined to go to the Academy,” said Barb Coffey, assistant basketball coach. “It’s all she ever wanted.” Franko lauded Wilmore for her hard work in academics as well as athletics.Zach Roscoe and Eric Perez will remain teammates, as they head to New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. Perez and Roscoe will play football under head coach Chad Roanhaus.Both boys are multi-sport athletes, although Roscoe said football is his favorite. Wrestling in the 135 pound class, Roscoe was 31-9 and reached the state tourney. Roscoe also is a musician – a drummer with a jazz band. Perez, a tight end on the Falcons football team, averaged more than 13 yards a carry. He also was a big part of the boys’ basketball team’s successful year and received honorable mention in the Metro 4A season-end awards.Travis Ewing, who pitches for the Falcons baseball team, is currently ranked fourth in the 4A Metro League, with a 1.25 ERA (earned run average). Ewing will attend Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, known for an outstanding baseball program.Fellow senior Alan Kramer, also a pitcher, will join a rival team at nearby Ellsworth Community College in Iowa. “They made me the best offer, a full scholarship,” Kramer said. He plans to study criminal justice while continuing his baseball career. In 2007, Washington Monthly named Ellsworth the seventh best community college in the nation. The baseball team had three players on the all-region team last year, and three of their players transferred to Division 1 teams. One player signed with the Chicago Cubs.
