On Saturday, March 21, 25 children from ages 4 to 10 attended a child safety class at the Woodmen Hills Recreation Center West.Universal Kempo Karate instructors Dian and Jan Megarry educated the children on how to deal with schoolyard bullies and child predators.The instructors role-played dangerous scenarios and demonstrated self-defense methods. After the presentation, the children were able to practice the methods.Jan Megarry encouraged parents to practice self-defense skills at home. “If you practice once a week, these skills will become second nature,” Megarry said.Jessica Norsky brought her two boys to the class. “We thought it would be great because we are always trying to emphasize safety with our children,” she said.Universal Kempo Karate is a national school of martial arts training, founded in 1980 by Professor Martin T. Buell.The Megarrys offer classes in Falcon at Patriot Learning Center and Woodmen Hills Recreation Center West. They will offer another free safety class in June.
