The Eastern Plains Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting June 4. An upcoming bylaw amendment vote, updates on membership drives and the Falcon Business Expo were discussed.Vincent King, owner of King Lock and Key, spoke to the chamber about physical security for business and residences. King is a U.S. Army-trained locksmith. ìOur unit was forward thinking and thought they wanted guys out in the field knowing about locks and security,î King said. ìMaybe, instead of kicking a door in, if it was a little less stressful scenario, have somebody pick it.î It is important to know and research a locksmith before you need one, he said. ìThe industry has been infiltrated by national and international scam artists,î King said. ìLike most of us here in the chamber, we work where we live and live where we work.îTreasurer Kevin Bornhoft of First Command Financial talked about the records research to rebuild the membership list from previous years. ìUsing every scrap of paper I could find; and, as the best I can figure out, we had about 29 people who at some point in the year last year claimed to be a member,î Bornhoft said. Fifteen members have paid dues or submitted applications for new membership so far in 2014, he said.New members will be prorated for the $100 per-year membership dues. ìWhat we attempt to provide as a chamber is value,î Bornhoft said. There will be a bylaw amendment vote at the July meeting, said Ben Kley of Falcon Broadband and chairman of the board. The amendment will allow a special election in October to vote on replacing the current interim board members. ìA bylaw amendment requires a 75 percent vote of the cur-rent paid members, so itís vital we get a good attendance at that meeting,î Kley said. The chamber will have a booth at the Falcon Business Expo, Kley said. The expo will be held July 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Walmart shopping center parking lot. ìI have supported it with Falcon Broadband several times myself, and think itís very successful,î Kley said. ìBut this year Iíll be doing it for the chamber.îìOne of the perks of volunteering at any of our fundraisers or events is that you are also encouraged to bring your business cards and promote your business at the same time,î said Connie Johnson, board president. The next meeting will be held July 2 at 7:30 a.m. at Grace Community Church in Falcon.
