Black Forest AARP focuses on fighting hunger

Black Forest AARP has been fighting hunger in several ways during the past year. Club members have not only donated non-perishable food items and cash grants to local area food banks for the purchase of food; but have conducted a successful food drive resulting in raising $1442.19 and 247 pounds of food for food banks in the area.At the December chapter meeting, chapter president Waldo Pendleton presented an additional $100 each to Black Forest Cares food bank and the Angel Food Ministries program in Colorado Springs. AARP members also brought 51 large stockings filled with personal, educational and treat items that the Salvation Army will distribute to children and teenagers in need this holiday season. The program at this meeting featured Mr. David’s first grade class at the Classical Academy performing Christmas songs. The AARP chapter presented the music department at the Classical Academy with a check for $50.The Black Forest Chapter motto is “To Serve Not To Be Served.” Individuals interested in being a part of this organization’s service to the local community should contact Waldo at 598-2504 or Charles at 749-9227. There is no minimum age requirement for joining this group. All are invited.AARP to host forum to help fight hungerIt is estimated that more than 51 million Americans suffer from lack of food – more than six million of them seniors. A city-wide meeting will be held Jan. 21 to focus on how best to mobilize the resources of AARP Colorado in partnership with other community organizations to lessen the impact of hunger in the community. All AARP members, community service organizations and individuals interested in fighting hunger in the Colorado Springs area are invited to attend.The Jan. 21 meeting will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church, 633 E. Dale Street, Colorado Springs, Colo. 80903.
